About the KwaZulu Rugby Union
The KwaZulu-Natal Rugby Union (KZNRU) is one of South Africa’s oldest and most respected rugby unions, with a proud history dating back to 24 June 1890.
Established in Pietermaritzburg during a pivotal moment in South African sporting history, the Union was formed to guide and grow the game of rugby throughout the region. What began as a meeting between a handful of rugby enthusiasts has evolved into a Union recognised for excellence, resilience, and passion for the sport.
For more than 130 years, the KZNRU has played a major role in shaping South African rugby. The Union has produced internationally recognised players, legendary Springbok captains, influential coaches, and respected rugby administrators who have contributed significantly to the development of the game both locally and internationally.
One of the Union’s proudest moments came in 1990 when Natal secured its historic Currie Cup victory during the Union’s centenary year — a defining achievement in KwaZulu-Natal rugby history.

Throughout its journey, the Union has endured and adapted through historic events including the Boer War, two World Wars, and the COVID-19 pandemic, always remaining committed to the spirit and growth of rugby.
